Morning mist lifts off the water in slow threads outside Chichester, deer step along the shore, and a great blue heron holds still at the edge of your own private lake. Coffee on the wrap-around porch tastes better with the mountains reflected below.

Inside, big windows and skylights pour light across heated bluestone floors and cedar ceilings, and the open living room gathers around a huge stone wood-burning fireplace. The kitchen runs on a Wolf range and a Sub-Zero fridge, made for long dinners at the big table. Three bedrooms with two and a half baths sleep six, and downstairs a game room holds a professional-grade billiard table, a wet bar, and a shelf of board games.

In summer the clear lake warms in the shallows, and you can swim out to the floating dock, row the little boat across, or hunt for turtles and frogs along the edge. Evenings belong to the lakeside fire pit, the Adirondack chairs, and a sky thick with stars.

Phoenicia is a few minutes down the road, with breakfast at the Phoenicia Diner and little shops full of antiques and local goods. Woodstock Brewing is about ten minutes off, Hunter Mountain about fifteen for winter skiing, and in autumn the ridges around the water turn red and gold.
