Late afternoon light slants through the woods onto the heated pool, and the kids press their faces to its underwater window while you swim against the current. The house around it is new, bright, and quiet, set apart among the trees yet only five minutes from downtown Stone Ridge.

Inside, a cook's kitchen holds a stand mixer, a rice maker, shelves of spices, and kid-sized dishes, with a high chair already waiting. Upstairs, three bedrooms and four baths sleep six, with heated floors underfoot and every light on a dimmer. Downstairs, a media room with a deep couch and surround sound sets up movie night, while a stone fireplace and a stack of chopped wood keep winter evenings warm.

Dinners move out to the huge screened porch or the covered deck as the woods go dark around you. Later the fire pit glows, there are s'mores to roast, and the forest holds its quiet.

Mornings start with coffee at Black Dot or Lydia's Cafe, and the O&W rail trail is even closer than town. Spend a day in New Paltz, wander the Hortus Arboretum and Arrowood Distillery, or drive over to Kingston, then come home by way of Cherries for a scoop of ice cream.
