Morning light pours through the skylights and big windows, and from the sunken living room all you see in every direction is forest. The 70s modern house stands at the edge of five wooded acres at the base of a hill, where deer run through the trees after a snowfall.

Upstairs, two king bedrooms each have a desk, and both of the two baths have tubs, so the house sleeps four with plenty of room to spread out. The kitchen is stocked down to the spices and oils, and a long farm-style table waits for slow dinners. On cold nights the wood-burning fireplace warms the whole place while music plays low on the sound system.

Outside, grill on the deck and eat at the outdoor table, then carry your drinks to the fire pit as the woods go dark. A short path climbs the hill behind the house. It makes a good morning walk with the dog.

Saugerties Main Street is eight minutes away, with good restaurants and bars, and Woodstock is about fifteen. Hike to the falls at Kaaterskill, ski Hunter Mountain in winter, or follow the nature walk out to the lighthouse.
