Coffee in hand on the terrace, you watch young deer wander across the lawn while morning sun pours through the tall glass of the A-frame. The yard is wide and green, ringed with trees, and quiet enough to hear birdsong and rain on the roof.

Inside, white walls, green cabinetry and natural wood keep everything bright and calm. The kitchen is stocked for real cooking, with good knives, a pour-over and an espresso machine, while a Bluetooth speaker fills the open room with music. Three bedrooms, one up a ladder in the loft, and one bath sleep six, and the bathroom floor is heated, a small joy on a cold morning.

Evenings belong outdoors. Steaks and vegetables from local farm markets go on the grill, then the fire pit crackles as the sky fills with stars. Adirondack chairs hold you there long after the embers fade, with Settlers of Catan waiting inside.

Catskill's shops and restaurants are a short drive, and Hudson, good for an afternoon of antiquing, is roughly fifteen to twenty minutes off. Kaaterskill Falls is twenty to twenty-five minutes away for a morning hike to the water. Afterward, brunch at Gracie's Luncheonette, or ice cream and a farm stand close by on the drive home.
