Snow settles on the branches while heat builds inside the private sauna out back, a playlist humming through its speaker, and stepping into the cold air afterward feels electric. Then you go inside and get warm all over again.

The 600-square-foot cabin, one bedroom and one bath for two, is a 1970s build brought up to date with vintage pieces, a wooden bar top, and shelves of novels, poetry, and photography books. A gas Franklin stove glows in the living room beside a couch heaped with blankets, and in the bedroom you can open every window to rain or morning birdsong. Mornings start with a Nespresso latte at the picnic table.

Two private acres of woods hold foot trails, a back deck, a front patio, and a hammock. Evenings go to the grill and s'mores over the fire pit, and at night a barred owl may call from the trees. In summer, the outdoor shower brings the forest right to you.

Catskill is a short drive, with Hudson, Saugerties, and Woodstock close behind for shops, restaurants, and vintage stores. The Kaaterskill Falls hike is near, Hunter Mountain and Windham Mountain are within half an hour for skiing, and pizza and beer at Rip Van Winkle Brewery make an easy end to the day.
