The ground-floor apartment in South Durham has its own entrance, one bedroom and one bath for two, with rustic decor, plenty of windows and a full kitchen stocked well enough to cook every night. In the bathroom, a deep soaking tub waits with bath salts and candles beside an enormous open shower. A shelf of DVDs covers any rainy evening.

Outside, a garden courtyard holds the gas grill, a fire pit and a private hot tub facing the mountains, where the stars come out thick after dark. By day you can walk the meadow, circle the pond, or stretch out in the hammock among the wildflowers.

Ski Windham is ten minutes away, with state trailheads close by for hiking once the snow melts. In Windham, browse the market and country store, stop at the diner, then drive back up the mountain as the evening light settles over the valley.
