Morning light pours through the bathroom and across the long clawfoot tub, deep enough to soak with your legs stretched out while the Old Dutch Church bells ring over uptown Kingston. The whole first floor of this 1890s townhouse is yours, with ornamental ceilings, a bay window and decorative fireplaces.

About 900 square feet hold one queen bedroom with blackout shades and one bath, sleeping two. Japanese calm meets vintage finds: live plants, handmade pottery, shelves of design books and cookbooks. In the big kitchen, a Viking stove and Smeg refrigerator wait beside a long dining table, good teas and a spread of Japanese snacks.

On Saturdays the farmers market is a two-minute walk, so fish and vegetables go straight from the stalls to the stove. Coffee tastes best on the front porch, watching the street go by. Bookstores, cafes and the Kinsley are a block or two away, and shows at Assembly play just down the street.

With a car, Ashokan Reservoir is about fifteen minutes off, Rhinebeck twenty and Mohonk thirty-five, with Woodstock, New Paltz and Hudson easy day trips. Evenings end with a stroll past historic buildings toward dinner and the glow of uptown windows.
