Morning mist lifts off the quiet cove in Athens as you push a kayak from the dock into Sleepy Hollow Lake, and across the water an eagle settles into a tree. The house has five bedrooms and three baths for up to ten, spread over three floors that look toward the water.

Upstairs, the king bedroom has its own balcony, and you can see the lake from the bed. On the main floor, an open kitchen with a double oven feeds a dining table that seats ten, and the wood stove warms the living room on cool nights. Handpicked art and colorful decor make every room feel personal.

Downstairs, a lounge with a wet bar and espresso maker opens onto a covered patio where the hot tub looks out over the lake, even in falling snow. The big deck, strung with lights and lined with sectionals, is where long dinners stretch into sunset. Later, marshmallows toast over the fire pit on the private beach.

Pools, a sand beach, and tennis and pickleball courts are all within walking distance in the lake community. Hudson, Catskill and Woodstock are 15 to 30 minutes away, and the trail to Kaaterskill Falls makes a fine morning hike before you head back to the water's edge as the light turns gold.
