Steam lifts off your skin as you step out of the sauna onto the bank of Stony Clove Creek, the water rushing over the stones and the cold air sharp after the heat. A plunge in the current is optional. It is also bracing.

Upstairs, the loft is one open studio for two with a single bath, brand-new finishes, and touches of antique charm. A standalone soaking tub looks out toward the creek, so a long bath comes with the water in view. The kitchen has a gas stove and everything for cooking a slow dinner in.

Outside, the grounds give you plenty to fill a day without getting in the car. Swim in the heated saltwater pool, curl up with a book in an A-frame zen den, or play Pac-Man in the lounge. After dark, build a fire by the river and watch the stars come out over the trees.

The center of Phoenicia is half a mile away, and the Phoenicia Diner is a four-minute drive for breakfast. Woodstock and Kingston are a short drive off, Belleayre is about 25 minutes for winter skiing, and the rail excursion in town makes a fun afternoon before you head back to the sound of the water.
