The sun drops behind the mountains and the long wraparound porch turns gold, a glass of wine in your hand and the lawn rolling away below the hilltop. Nobody is in a hurry to go inside.

Inside, the old Victorian manor, once a bed and breakfast, is filled with antiques, chandeliers and a servants' staircase, and every room has its own character. Seven bedrooms sleep 14, each with a private bathroom, several with whirlpool tubs and most with mountain views. Gas fireplaces warm two living rooms stocked with board games, and the dining table seats the whole party.

Out back, the patio has a gas grill and an outdoor table for long summer dinners, and a badminton net stretches across the grass in summer and fall. Walking paths wind through the woods, a treehouse with swings and slides waits for the kids, and snowy days bring sledding on the grounds.

Downtown Hudson, with its galleries, antique shops and restaurants, is about five minutes by car. The Olana trails start just across the road, a winery pours tastings within walking distance, and Kaaterskill Falls is close enough for a morning hike with the spray cool on your face.
