Dinner reaches the long dining table with logs crackling in the fireplace beside you, while the woods beyond the windows go dark and still. Later the board games come out. Nobody hurries off to bed.

The house is bright and newly renovated, with four bedrooms and 2.5 baths for up to eight, a carpeted TV room, and several sitting rooms where everyone finds a corner. The kitchen is large and well stocked, with a counter for quick breakfasts. In the primary bath, a heated floor and a modern soaking tub wait at the end of the day.

Mornings belong to the deck, coffee in hand, trees all around and perhaps a pair of deer wandering past. After dark, gather at the fire pit for s'mores. Kids find a trampoline, a teepee, a basketball hoop, and a small pond to explore.

Downtown New Paltz and its cafes are about ten minutes away, Kingston about fifteen, and Woodstock makes an easy day out. Hiking trails lie fifteen to thirty minutes from the door. On the first afternoon, a farmers market and a wine shop can fill the fridge for a night in, with the woods turning gold outside.
