Night settles over Mount Tremper, the fire pit crackles in the backyard, and somewhere past the trees a river keeps up its low, steady rush beneath a sky full of stars.

Inside, the cabin pairs log walls with modern polish: two velvet couches facing a 60 inch TV, an open kitchen stocked for real cooking, and a deep bathtub in a bathroom scented with lavender and mint. Two bedrooms and one bath sleep four, and the main bed waits up in a snug loft. On cold nights the heat holds steady, even with snow piling up outside.

Mornings are easy here. Brew coffee, roll out the yoga mat, then head for a swimming hole on the Esopus River about five minutes away, or the Ashokan Rail Trail, five to ten minutes off. Phoenicia is five minutes by car, with breakfast waiting at the Phoenicia Diner.

Woodstock is fifteen minutes away for shops and dinner, and Belleayre, about twenty minutes out, means skiing in winter and a beach in summer. The Emerson Kaleidoscope and Woodstock Brewery are a three minute drive. Closer still, you can stroll a few doors down to The Pines for a meal, then walk back home under the dark trees.
