Outside, the yard opens wide across 1.5 acres of forest that smells of pine. After dark, strings of white lights come on over the lawn and the fire pit, where marshmallows toast in the Adirondack chairs and fireflies drift through summer evenings. Clear nights bring a sky full of stars.

Kaaterskill Falls makes an easy morning hike, and Hunter Mountain and Windham are about 20 minutes off for skiing. Hudson is roughly 25 minutes away for an afternoon of shops. Come home hungry, because a farm-to-table restaurant waits just down the road.
