Morning arrives through the open bedroom window as the rush of the Saw Kill, and by the time the coffee is ready you are in a rocking chair above the water, watching the eddies turn. The light comes gold through the trees.

Inside, a family of artists and craftsmen renovated the 1960s cottage in a farmhouse modern style with bohemian and vintage touches, a picture window, a rain shower and a full kitchen with a dishwasher and a French press. Two bedrooms and one bath sleep four. On a gray afternoon, pull an album from the vinyl collection, set it on the record player and open a board game.

The patio looks straight down onto the creek, where a blue heron might stand in the shallows and birds work the branches overhead. Afternoons drift between the hammock, the grill and the outdoor dining table. After dark, the fire pit throws its glow toward a sky full of stars.

The center of Woodstock is a four-minute drive or an eight-minute ride on the borrowed bikes, and Bearsville Theater and Levon Helm Studios are close enough for an evening show. Kingston is about twenty minutes away, and the trail up Giant Ledge makes a fine morning hike before you head back to the sound of moving water.
