Snow piles against the windows, the wood stove ticks with heat, and the deep jacuzzi tub is filling for the evening. Outside, the woods on the slope of Overlook Mountain go dark and the stars come out thick.

Inside, warm wood paneling wraps every wall, and radiant heat keeps the floors warm underfoot. The cottage has two bedrooms and one bath and sleeps four, with a main-floor bedroom and a sloped-ceiling loft upstairs. The kitchen is stocked for real cooking, and sunlight pours in through windows on every side.

Mornings belong to the stone patio, coffee in hand, while hummingbirds work the gardens. A trail starts right behind the house and climbs to an old quarry, where a stone bench looks out over the Hudson Valley. Evenings, the fire pit crackles under a sky with almost no light pollution, and owls call from the trees.

Downtown Woodstock is about ten minutes down the hill for breakfast, shops, and dinner at the Red Onion. On Saturday, drive on to the Kingston farmers market and browse the shelves at Rough Draft books, then catch a show at Levon Helm Studios as the night winds down.
