Steam drifts off the hot tub on the back deck, the gazebo roof keeps off rain or snow, and above the fenced yard the stars come out one by one. Ten more minutes in the water feels like the whole plan.

Inside, the cottage holds two bedrooms and one bath for up to four, with a king bed in good linens and soft robes for the walk back in. The kitchen is stocked down to the spices, the hot sauce, and the espresso, and a little wine bar has a bottle ready to open on arrival. Put on something from the eclectic vinyl collection on the record player and let the evening run long.

Out back, a wide private yard stretches behind a tall fence, with room for a dog to run and a bed and bowls set out for them indoors. Burgers go on the gas grill. Later, the fire pit throws a warm glow across the grass.

Downtown Hudson is about ten minutes by car, where Warren Street fills with cafes, breweries, and shops, and the Antique Warehouse is worth a slow browse. Olana makes an easy afternoon nearby. On the way home, stop at Golden Harvest Farm for a bag of apple cider donuts to have with tomorrow's coffee.
