Morning light falls through the skylights of the little studio cabin, and the only sound is the woods beyond its French doors. A screened porch opens off the room, a few steps from the barn where coffee is waiting.

Inside, the post and beam barn rises into a vaulted, light-filled living space with stained glass transoms, vintage rustic finds and small apple touches hidden in the details. A chef's kitchen with a gas stove and a french press handles slow breakfasts, and radiant floors keep you warm when snow settles on the trees. Two bedrooms, including a queen suite looking over the main room, and one bath sleep four.

Sliding glass doors lead to a deck above the creek and a nature preserve, where the trees close in until it feels like a tree house. A private stairway runs down to the water, and the grill is ready as the stars come out. Across the road, a Morgan mare and six goats are glad to see you with apples and carrots.

The historic village of Rhinebeck is a five-minute drive, with restaurants, bookstores and a record store. Red Hook, Kingston and the Omega Institute are close, and the hikes nearby wait for a crisp fall morning.
