Your first coffee on the deck feels like morning in a treehouse, the branches opening onto Lake Peekskill and the birds already busy below. Keep an eye on the sky. Eagles work the water here.

Inside, the renovated cottage has two bedrooms and two baths for up to four, with heated floors underfoot and a king bed upstairs. The kitchen looks straight out at the lake, so even chopping onions comes with a view. On cool evenings the indoor sauna warms you through, and the 86-inch screen turns movie night into an event.

Below the deck, steps lead through the private yard to the dock, where kayaks wait and the fish bite close to shore. A hammock by the water holds you for an afternoon with a book. After dark, dinner comes off the grill while the gas fire pit throws its glow across the deck and the trees go black against the lake.

Bear Mountain is about twenty minutes away, and Fahnestock State Park and Storm King Mountain are close for a day on the trails. Cold Spring and Beacon make an easy afternoon of shops and lunch, and Dia Beacon is about fifteen minutes out. Then it's back for an evening walk around the lake as the light turns gold on the water.
