Morning arrives on birdsong, and you carry your coffee out to the deck, where an umbrella table looks over a wide lawn and beds of flowers. The air smells of cut grass. Nobody needs you anywhere yet.

Inside, the one-bedroom apartment for two runs back from the road much deeper than you'd guess, all on one level with its own private entrance. A skylight brightens the eat-in kitchen, stocked down to the oil, spices, and teas, while a cathedral ceiling lifts the living room, where antique furniture and shelves of books invite a long afternoon. The bathroom is generous, with a roomy shower, and a washer and dryer make a longer stay easy.

When you arrive, a chilled split of bubbly, two cold glasses, and a bowl of fresh fruit are waiting in the fridge. At night, open the bedroom windows and let the crickets take over.

The center of Red Hook is a mile away, with its shops and restaurants, and the bagel shop is close enough to walk to for breakfast. Bard College is minutes off and Rhinebeck about ten. In summer, Rose Hill orchards has peaches and blueberries, and Greig's Farm and the Abandoned Cidery pour a glass out in the open country.
