In Lanesville, with the bedroom window cracked open, Stony Clove Creek runs over its rocks just past the yard, and it is the last sound you hear before sleep. In the morning a stone path leads down to the water. Bring your coffee, dangle your feet and watch the current slide by.

Inside, the cabin pairs old Catskills character with a careful renovation, with stained glass windows, hidden nooks and a tiny door that opens onto a reading spot children claim at once. Three bedrooms and one bath sleep six, and skylights upstairs frame the stars from bed. The bathroom has heated floors and a deep bathtub, and plush robes hang in the closets.

Evenings move outside to the oversized deck, where string lights glow over the grill and the outdoor dining table. Later the hot tub steams under a dark sky while the fire pit crackles near the water's edge. On cold nights the original wood stove warms the whole house, and a snowstorm only makes it cozier.

Phoenicia and its diner are about ten minutes away, and Hunter's slopes and dinner in Tannersville are an easy drive. Spend a day hiking to Kaaterskill Falls or wandering Woodstock, then come back to the sound of rushing water in the dark.
