Steam lifts off the hot tub into the cold Lanesville air, and above the trees the stars come out so thick you stop trying to count them. A few steps away the outdoor sauna is already warm. Somewhere past the yard, a stream keeps running in the dark.

Inside, the cabin has two bedrooms with queen beds and one bath, and it sleeps four. Evenings belong to the fireplace and a record player with a stack of good albums. The kitchen is stocked well enough to cook every meal, espresso included, and dinner goes on a round table set for four.

Mornings start on the back deck with mountains rising on every side, and at dusk deer sometimes wander across the big backyard. After dark there are two fire pits ready for s'mores. There is also a pizza oven for dough you stretch yourself.

Trailheads begin minutes from the door, and Kaaterskill Falls and the mountain hotel ruins make fine day hikes. Phoenicia is about ten minutes away for breakfast at the Phoenicia Diner and pizza at Brio's. Hunter Mountain is even closer when the snow falls, and Tannersville and Woodstock fill the slow afternoons. On summer days, finish at a swimming hole and let your hair dry in the late sun.
