Snow starts drifting past the windows in the late afternoon, the forest behind the house turns quiet and white, and a deer steps out at the edge of the yard. You stay in your socks and let the evening arrive.

Inside, the chalet-style cabin opens around a large kitchen stocked for real cooking, flowing into a sunken living room and dining area where everyone ends up together. Four bedrooms and two baths sleep eight, each room with its own mini-split, and Aesop soaps wait by the sinks. Up top, a sunlit loft holds a pool table, board games, and shelves of books.

Out back, a wide grassy yard gives kids room to run while the gas grill heats up for dinner on the patio. After dark, the fire pit is where the s'mores happen, and later the indoor fireplace keeps the living room warm.

Hunter Mountain is about five minutes away, close enough to come back for lunch between runs, with Windham in reach too. On a clear day, drive about twenty minutes to Kaaterskill Falls and watch the water spill through the trees, then settle in for dinner at one of the restaurants or breweries nearby.
