The sun drops behind the trees on one side of the house as dinner reaches the table on the screened porch, and the meadow below fills with fireflies and the sound of crickets.

Inside, the 1890s farmhouse has three bedrooms and two and a half baths for six, with organic cotton bedding and a clawfoot soaking tub beneath a window in the king suite. Downstairs, the kitchen holds a chef's gas range, sharp knives, a Dutch oven and a Chemex. On cold nights the wood-burning fireplace crackles beside the piano.

Mornings begin with coffee on the back porch while the sun rises over the field. Mowed paths cross twelve acres to a small pond with turtles and frogs, deer wander past the porches, and the hammock out front waits for an afternoon with a book. After dark, the fire pit is for s'mores and stars.

Germantown's Main Street is five minutes away, with Gaskins for dinner, and Gulden Farm down the road sells eggs and grass-fed meat. Hudson, Rhinebeck and Kingston are within half an hour. A walk down the road at dusk opens onto farmland and the blue line of the Catskills.
