Morning light pours through the huge living room window, and beyond the glass the fields of a historic farm estate roll out toward the trees, full of birdsong and the occasional deer or wild turkey. A rooster may announce himself before your coffee is ready.

Inside, the cottage is rustic and elegant at once, with plush seating, softly scented blankets and a kitchen stocked with an induction stove, a Nespresso machine and a french press. Three bedrooms and one and a half baths sleep six, and a workspace behind a closed door keeps the laptop out of sight.

Step outside and the land opens into acres of walking paths along the paddock, with chickens and goats close by and fenced grass where a dog can run free. In autumn the trees across the property turn color one by one. Evenings belong to the grill and the fire pit under a dark country sky.

Downtown Millbrook, with its restaurants and shops, is about ten minutes by car, and so is Millbrook Winery for an afternoon tasting. Mill House brewery is twenty minutes off, while Stanfordville and Pine Plains make easy drives for a slow lunch. Back at the cottage, a basket of fresh farm eggs makes the case for breakfast in.
