Outside, children can hunt for frogs and salamanders along the water's edge while the propane grill handles dinner. After dark, the fire pit throws warm light over the grounds, and in winter you can watch snow drift down over the pond from the glass.

Creeks and waterfalls lie a short drive from Kerhonkson, and farms, breweries, hiking, and restaurants are all within half an hour. The local towns pour good wine and coffee, and the city is about two hours behind you. Come back by dusk, when the woods go hushed and the first stars show over the trees.
