Dusk settles over the meadow, the fire pit crackles out back, and fireflies lift from the grass against the dark ridge of the Shawangunks. Inside the fence, the dog runs loose and you stay put.

The cottage opens up under a vaulted ceiling, with windows full of land and sky. In the kitchen, a farmhouse sink and butcher block counters face a window over the meadow, and the shelves hold spices, oils, and fresh ground coffee. Two bedrooms and one bath sleep four, and the upstairs room wakes to open fields and mountains.

Mornings belong to the deck, coffee in hand, while goldfinches work the wildflowers and deer browse just beyond the fence. A path through the tall grass leads to a quiet pond, and after dark an owl may call from the trees.

Minnewaska State Park and the Mohonk Preserve are close enough for an early start on the Awosting Falls trail. Later, ride the Rail Trail from Accord to Kerhonkson, linger over dinner at Mill & Main, and pedal back as the sun goes down over the fields.
