In Brewster, the sun drops behind the forest at the far edge of the lawn, the old sugar maple goes dark against the sky, and the reservoir below holds the last of the light. Behind you, a house more than two centuries old stands with its doors open.

Inside, the rooms still feel set for another era, with period furniture, a dining room, a bar pantry and a library of classic books where the wood-burning fireplace crackles on cool evenings. The kitchen is modern, with a Viking gas stove and a long table, so cooking for a crowd is easy. The house sleeps 12, with three baths.

Days belong to the grounds. A path leads through the trees down to the water, a swing and picnic table wait in the backyard, and the lawn has room for croquet, badminton or volleyball. When the air cools, the enclosed porch catches a breeze, and later the fire pit glows under the stars.

Good restaurants are just down the road, with hiking close by and the Empire Trail within reach for a day on two wheels. Come home to a quiet field at dusk, where deer sometimes step out of the woods to graze.
