A log crackles in the living room fireplace, large paintings glow on the white walls, and the shelves around you hold more books than a long weekend could ever reach. You sink into a deep chair and stay there.

The farmhouse dates to the 1700s, and it shows in wide plank floors, low wooden beams and sloped ceilings upstairs. Three bedrooms and a bath and a half sleep six, and the kitchen has everything for a long dinner in.

Behind the house, three acres open into meadow and woods. A fenced garden off the screened porch lets a dog run free, and at the edge of the field the neighbor's horses amble over to say hello. Mornings start with coffee and a view of the meadow, afternoons with badminton on the lawn, and evenings with the grill and the outdoor table while fireflies drift over the grass.

Tinker Street and the center of Woodstock are about five minutes by car, and Levon Helm Studios is close enough to walk to for a Midnight Ramble. Saugerties is an easy drive, the trails of Overlook Mountain are near, and in winter Hunter is about forty minutes away. Later, the sky over the field fills with stars.
