At night you leave the windows open and fall asleep to the creek bubbling over the rocks behind the house. Morning brings coffee on the bluestone balcony above the water and its small waterfall. By evening you're on the front porch with a glass of wine, watching deer drift across the lawn.

The farmhouse dates to 1825 and once took in summer boarders, and two bedrooms still have their original boarding-house sinks. It's really two full homes joined by a hallway, each with its own retro kitchen and living room, so five bedrooms and four tiled baths sleep ten, with room to gather or scatter. Vintage pieces and modern finishes share every room.

Out the door, a trail of about a mile loops through a hundred-acre forest of rock outcroppings, streams, and swimming holes. Back at the house, a wide lawn has space for frisbee and running dogs, and after dark the fire pit is ready for s'mores under a sky full of stars.

Downtown Saugerties is about fifteen minutes away, and Woodstock and Kingston are an easy drive. Spend an afternoon walking the stone sculpture at Opus 40 or head up to Katterskill Falls, then stop at Story Farms on the way home for whatever's fresh at the farmstand.
