Barn on the Pond

Morning starts with coffee by the pond while a blue heron works the shallows and the meadow beyond catches the first light. Behind you, the cherry red barn opens onto soaring wood beams and floor-to-ceiling windows, so the grounds seem to follow you inside.

The great room is where everyone gathers, sinking into the giant couch by the gas fireplace or crowding around the enormous table for breakfast and long dinners. The kitchen keeps up with a crowd, with two ovens, two dishwashers and a huge island. Six bedrooms and three baths, spread across the barn and a private cottage, sleep 12.

Afternoons drift between the heated pool, the hot tub and four acres of lawn for frisbee and touch football. At dusk, cocktails move to the upper deck under string lights as the sun drops behind the mountains. Later a bonfire crackles in the stone fire pit, thyme growing between its rocks, while the stars come out overhead.

Woodstock is about ten minutes up the road, with cafes, antique shops and its flea market, and downtown Saugerties is just as close. Spend a Saturday at the Saugerties farmers market, then take the easy walk out to the Saugerties lighthouse along the Hudson.
