Morning light pours through ten-foot glass in Highland as a barge slides down the Hudson far below, and eagles wheel past at eye level. Across the water lie the parklands of FDR's birthplace and, to the south, the Culinary Institute of America.

Inside, the house is a mid-century modern composition of limestone, beechwood and glass, with four bedrooms, each with its own bath, sleeping eight. The three upstairs rooms face the river. A Fisher Paykel gas stove holds court in a kitchen made for long family dinners, while a media room with a ten-foot screen and a game room for ping pong and air hockey wait for rainy evenings.

Outside, the broad deck hangs over a granite palisade, with a hot tub and speakers for music as the light fades. A level down, the heated saltwater infinity pool looks out over the same water. Twelve acres hold a lighted tennis court, a lava-rock sauna and modern sculptures lining the drive.

The Walkway over the Hudson is close by, and the rest of the valley lies within about 45 minutes: apple orchards, antique shops, Robber Baron mansions and farmers' markets for the evening's ingredients. Come home to a glass of wine around the fire pit while the moon rises over the river.
