Snow drifts past tall windows in Stanfordville while a fire crackles beside the open kitchen, and the smell of dinner rises toward beams that have held this barn up since the 1800s. Everyone is within earshot. Nobody is in the way.

Three levels give four bedrooms and three baths to a group of eight. The kitchen has counter seating and sliding doors to the deck, and upstairs the space opens under 30-foot ceilings to a long dining table and a deep couch facing the big screen. Mornings begin on heated bathroom floors, with a soaking tub that looks out over the yard.

Out back, the lawn slopes toward a creek, and the patio is where coffee tastes best in early light. Grill on the deck, eat outside, then sink into the hot tub, warm all year, as the countryside goes dark. A fire pit and a stack of wood wait for the last hour.

Rhinebeck is a short drive for markets and its historic village, and Hudson is within easy reach too. Shoot sporting clays at Orvis Sandanona in Millbrook, about twenty minutes off, or spend a day on the trails at Mohonk Mountain House, about an hour away. Then home to the sunroom, where the tabletop shuffleboard is waiting for one more round.
