Riverfront Stone Cottage

About this property

Steam lifts off the hot tub into the cold air as the sun goes down over the Shawangunk Kill, and the ridge darkens against a sky filling with stars. Below the lawn, the river barely moves.

Inside, the stone cottage feels warmer and roomier than it looks from the drive, with wood walls, a massive stone fireplace stacked with firewood, and a dining table long enough for everyone. Five bedrooms and two baths sleep 14, the kitchen is stocked for elaborate meals, and upstairs a steam shower waits. A sauna takes care of the coldest nights.

Mornings start with coffee on the deck, watching deer cross the yard and birds settle along the bank. Canoes, life vests and kayaks wait at the water's edge, ready to push off from the dock for a lazy paddle upriver. Back on land there is ping pong, hammocks strung up in the yard, and a fire pit for marshmallows after dark.

For a day out, the trails of Minnewaska State Park and the Mohonk Mountain Preserve are close, and New Paltz, about ten minutes away, has shops and restaurants for lunch after a hike. Nearer still, the Gardiner rail trail is a few minutes' drive off, with mountain bikes for rent right beside it.
